Visiting Pey-Berland Tower
• A landmark in the town. In 1863 the spire was topped with a colossal statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine, which has recently been restored and regilded.
• Bordeaux seen from above. From the top of the 231 steps the tower affords fine views of the city and surrounding area, revealing all the architectural wealth of Bordeaux with its medieval city, the 18th-century town and its modern-day appearance, and the principle monuments and river Garonne.
Understanding Pey-Berland Tower
• A cathedral bell tower. Pey-Berland Tower is the free-standing bell tower of the Saint André Cathedral. It was built so as to be able to provide the cathedral with larger bells, whose vibrations would have endangered the building. A great bell weighing eight tonnes, called Ferdinand-André, was installed in 1869.
• The origin of its name. The building is named after Archbishop Pey-Berland (circa 1370-1458) who commissioned the tower, and who was a moving force behind the renewal of the Church in Aquitaine, which was controlled by the Plantagenets at the time.
